Ep.68 | Nutrition Basics with Coach Andy
Show Notes and Resources
Before moving into the topic of the podcast, Coach Andy and Eric start with a brief tangent on first impressions, and their favorite hockey players. They move into the nutrition topic based on an online member question on where to look for quality information.
From here, Coach Eric takes the lead running through a nutrition talk he gave last year to his high draft eligible off-ice clients. He starts with some key terms such ‘calorie’, ‘macronutrients’, and ‘micronutrients’, followed by an explanation of the different ways to burn calories (more technically known as the types of energy expenditure). From there, he and Coach Andy discuss the three macronutrients (protein, dietary fat, and carbohydrates), and some key points with respect to each. They touch on the role of each marco in your diet, and how to structure a solid foundation of nourishment on a daily basis. Coach Eric displays his ‘Nutrition Pyramid’ to explain how to weigh your base diet against performance specific fueling and supplemental nutrition.
Moving on, Coach Eric provides a template example of a young athlete, what their energy expenditure might look like, how (and how much) to eat depending on your goals, and gametime nutrition.
They finish off on the topic of supplements and what to look for in pre-workouts, creatine, and protein powders.
